Default Connectivity but no received packets

I had a friend over this morning and we were trying to hook him up to my
wireless network, with no success. By manually entering TCP/IP info, we were
able to get excellent connectivity. We did see "send packets", but no
"received packets." I have two questions. One, what does it mean to have
connectivity? Two, what recommendations can be made to help us resolve our
problem? Thank you.

You might download & run winsockfix (I usually download the one at
majorgeeks.com) to see if it addresses the problem. If not, find the latest
XP driver for his wireless card from the mfr's website, & install it.
