Default Please Help! files marked as read only will not change

Hi, i am using Win XP and a program Called Password Keeper. It has
worked fine for some time. then several months ago it would not let
me add anymore passwords. I thought maybe it was at its limit. then
someone suggested that maybe the read only box was checked. i checked
and sure enough, it was.

i un checked it and it worked fine again. well now it is doing it
again. i checked and sure enought the box was checked again.

I unchecked it

then opened the program, it sitll wont add.

i check the attributes again and it is checked again.

i checked the entire Program Files directory is read only.

it will not uncheck.
well it unchecks, but when you close it and open it again, it is re
checked.

any ideas?

Mike

This is by design. The files are /NOT/, I repeat *NOT* read only.

As I don't know what "password keeper program" you're referring to I
couldn't possibly say. The best password keeper program in the Universe is
RoboForm and that only allows the storage of 30 passwords in the free
version - any more and you must pay $35 to register.

If it only allows 30 passwords, free, then it can't be the best in the
universe.

but i am getting away from the point. the point is that i can not
change files in the directorys in question.

MIchael, forget about the read only on the folders. It is normal for the
Program Files folder (and most other folders on an NTFS drive) to show a
square mark in the ReadOnly box. NOTE: The square mark is *different*
than a check signifying read-only. The square mark is related more to
permissions. The general gist of its presence is "some users do not have
full rights to this folder's contents."

Check the files in question directly. Remove the Read Only attribute in
their properties sheets.

As to why the file is getting marked read only over and over... Are you
restoring it from a backup on CD? If yes, it's normal to have to remove
the Read Only attribute from files. The program the file belongs to may
be protecting the file as well. Check with their tech support if this
seems to be the case.

Another thought... When you are unable to add passwords to the program,
are you logged on with the same account that you used when you installed
the program? If not, you may have to run the installation again. Do that
while you are logged on to the account that is having trouble with the
application.

I am having the same problem the Micheal is having.
I have Windows xp, and I have copied some photo images in a file to my photos folder. When it appears in the folder and I select properties the read only box is checked with a box. When I uncheck it close the properties manager, and then reopen the properties manager the box is still checked. Whenever I try to delete any of the photos, or the folder itself it says that it is read only.

Now that I have copied this folder three times they are wasting space in my folder. Could this be a registry problem of some sort? I know that files on a CD should be read only... but shouldn't files that I copy from the cd be able to be manipulated freely? Is there any other way to clear the read only property?

Please advise...

Don't know who Michael is.
Please advise him of this option.

Go to:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Line 135 -- left side.
"Clear Read-Only attributes"
426KB download.

Following is part of the included TXT file.
CROA 1.3 © 2000-2002 David Crowell
-----------------------------------

DESCRIPTION:
-----------------------------------
CROA - Clear Read-Only Attributes
CROA adds an entry to the context menu for folders that allows you to clear
the read-only flag of that folder, all subfolders, and files. This is
particularly useful after copying files from a CD-ROM to the hard-drive.
