Default Lettering drive partitions

To leave room for removable drives someone suggested I could set my CD/DVD
to a "distant" letter so as not to be in the way. I did this through
Administrative Tools, etc.

But something keeps changing it to the next letter after my hard drive
partitions. How can I make it stay where I put it?

PS, I'm NOT a long time XP user.

I don't see how moving the drive letter of the CD would make it "not in the
way" of a removable drive, they will just get assigned a higher letter.

It is possible for CD/DVD drives and removable USB devices to get
conflicting drive letters. Assigning a permanent drive letter, such
as M or X, to the CD/DVD is one way of avoiding this.

Use Start - Run - DISKMGMT.MSC and configure the drive letter.

If your computer is infested with any Norton/Symantec products make
sure these are totally turned off (or even better, uninstalled) before
you make these changes. Otherwise the Norton crapware will "protect"
your system by undoing the changes you have made.

Good luck

Assuming it works. But how do you make it permanent?

That takes me to the same procedure I went through the several times I've
reset it. Is this method of getting to it supposed to be the correct way
of making the setting permanent?

Yes. It works fine for me.

Do you have any sort of system support/system protection software
installed? Norton is one of the worst for doing this sort of thing
but it is not the only product that does it.

Nothing like that yet. I used your method of getting to that screen, set
the letter and it seems to be sticking now. It seems strange that it
wouldn't be the same when approached through the control panel. But I had
a shortcut on the desktop for it and it even changed its icon to something
with a big red "?" on it when it changed the letter from S: to I:. I hope
it stays put now.

At any rate, thanks.

I may have mis-spoke. I'm getting a USB drive for backups. I've never
used one and only assumed it would be called a removable, but I also
assumed it would be "given" a letter or letters right after the onboard HD
partitions. As I indicated, I'm a new XP user and I have limited
experience with W98.

You assumed incorrectly, it will assign an available drive letter, not one
that is already in use, or should I say that is what XP is supposed to do,
doesn't always work correctly.
