Hi All
Hope someone out there can help or point me to another forum that can. I have recently bought a Sony DVD RW AW-G170A multidrive and am trying to use a DVD-RAM disc in it. The disc is a cartridge type but I have removed it from that. The RAM disk type is Panasonic Type4 I am running XP SP2. It opens up in an empty folder but no matter what i do I can't format it or eject it once it has been read. If I try to format it says it is in use by another program but i have no other programs running. I have Nero6 and EasyCD Platimun5 installed, not sure if there is a background program mounting this disc somewhere that I cant see. Any suggestions on how to rectify this would be much appreciated. The only way of ejecting at present is just as the machine starts to boot. Thanks in advance Steve |

Why format it? Did you try to simply write to it from Windows Explorer?
(You don't use a DVD-RAM the same was as an ordinary DVD). Did you install the drivers for the Sony? If I remember correctly, you might need to install a special driver for the DVD-RAM and it's installation is often optional in the setup disk. Also, drivers for DVD-RAM has often problem with other kind of packet writing softwares such as Nero's InCD (EasyCD also has its own packet writing software). If you have installed one or these two packet writing softwares, maybe you could try removing them. -- Sylvain Lafontaine, ing. I thought you had to format DVD RAM to UDF format?
The DVD came with no drivers so only using the default. Have got a a DVD-RAM driver installed as part of my Panasonic camcorder software. How do I check and remove EasyCD or Nero packet writing modules? I wish to try and keep Nero/Easy Cd as they are handy for CD-R or DVD-R burning! I think I have found the problem!!!
As soon as the DVD-RAM is inserted it is in use by DirectCD! How can I remove this part of EasyCD Creator without the rest of it? I don't use DVD-RAM anymore (because I find them slow in comparaison of
other types of DVD) so I cannot tell you for sure what's the current situation but some years ago, must DVD-RAM where already pre-formated to be used for Windows (ie. you could directly read/write your files/repertories on them from Windows Explorer and without using a dedicated software like Nero or Easy CD. DirectCD and InCD are packet writing softwares. Unlike the other kind of writing softwares like Nero and EasyCD, a packet writing software give you the ability to directly write files and folders on a CD/DVD from Windows Explorer without first creating a track for it. Also, the packet writing softwares for ordinary DVD are incompatible with those used for DVD-RAM. In a well done installation, everything should work smothly; however, having installed two types of dvd writing software (NERO + EasyCD) is asking for trouble. I cannot tell you how to remove DirectCD. Maybe you should remove EasyCD and then reinstall it but now chosing not to install DirectCD. Surely, you must have this option somewhere in its setup. Finally, I'm not sure if even after removing DirectCD, you will be able to write on a DVD-RAM without first installing a driver. For this point, you should consult the documentation that come with your Sony and install any driver that might come with it. -- Sylvain Lafontaine, ing.
