Hi,
after I've looked into all of these Knowledgebase articles around CD-ROMS with Upperfilters and lowerfilters I need help! Here's the problem: I can read a CD-ROM or DVD in my Windows XP SP2 System only once after booting! Meaning all works perfectly for the first CD or DVD I read. After I opened the drive and closed it again, independent of the fact that I put in another or the same CD-ROM, i can't read the filesystem of the CD-ROM and get an error like "Can't access D:\ incorrect function" (sorry for not having the right message - but it's in german on my system). I don't think it's a hardware problem, i even have bought a new (different) DVD burner (IDE). I also can access Audio CDs without a problem with tools like Winamp and can write CD-ROMs and DVDs with nero. So it looks like a filesystem access problem. I found the Knowledgebase entry 315350, which describes my sympton but not my software and it didn't help. I deleted all the upperfilters and lowerfilters on the CD-ROM Hyphen in registry, so that no filters interfere with other drivers in my setup. I tried to reinstall all the nero stuff, I compared to all my other XP systems ... without any success. Please help... Ciao, Bernd (calling from the wild south of germany) |

Have you tried swapping the cable and/or which IDE port you're
connecting it to on the motherboard? bernd@kunrath.de wrote: > Hi, > > after I've looked into all of these Knowledgebase articles around > CD-ROMS with Upperfilters and lowerfilters I need help! > > Here's the problem: > > I can read a CD-ROM or DVD in my Windows XP SP2 System only once after > booting! Hi,
thanks for the answer - I swapped the whole drive including cable and tried it under a different instance of XP on the same machine and it works fine there - so I assume it's not related to the connection. Is there a special HW feature/sensor/line for detection of changing the disc? Not that I know of, just Windows XP detecting a different volume (I
believe by name). There is a phenomenon in XP that allows the kernel to degrade a drive's transfer mode when it detects errors reading from a drive, but to my knowledge that only decreases performance. Anyways, in case it's related you can check out this reference: http://winhlp.com/WxDMA.htm bernd@kunrath.de wrote: > Hi, > > thanks for the answer - I swapped the whole drive including cable and > tried it under a different instance of XP on the same machine and it > works fine there - so I assume it's not related to the connection. Hi,
I've read that, but can't find a something related to my problem (i think). Maybe another thing helping in problem determination: The drive works fine when running in SAFE MODE! Can i restore the settings for the CD-ROM to the settings working under SAFE MODE? Unfortunately, Safe Mode just fails to load your settings and instead
uses OS defaults. You could go back to those defaults by performing a "repair install". bernd@kunrath.de wrote: > Hi, > > I've read that, but can't find a something related to my problem (i > think). > > Maybe another thing helping in problem determination: > > The drive works fine when running in SAFE MODE! Hiya Bernd. Since I didn't offer any links on that last post, here you
go: Perform a Repair Installation http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...ips/doug92.mspx -and- How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install Author: Michael Stevens MS-MVP http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm The Microsoft flavor is very direct (and accurate) while the Stevens version answers the "what if" questions that people encounter. If you can get by without doing a repair install, give that a though. At what point in time did this symptom begin? Would a System Restore to some date before that help? Hi Justin,
thanks for the answer; I build a slipstream CD and I did a repair install and it was worth the try, but it didn't help<g>. The problem still exists! How weird is that? Have you downloaded the latest chipset & controller
drivers for your motherboard and installed them to see if that changes anything? bernd@kunrath.de wrote: > Hi Justin, > > thanks for the answer; I build a slipstream CD and I did a repair > install and it was worth the try, but it didn't help<g>.
