My computer cannot be booted from hard disk directly, and I doubt my
hard disk has some data corrupted?? However, I am able to see the Windows XP splash screen but it never can go to Windows; it then restarts by itself in an infinite loop. I think this problem was caused after I failed to install the linux in different partition. I tried to boot the machine from safe mode, but it still didn't help. I tried to boot the machine from bootable Windows XP CD, and hopefully I can repair or format the hard disk, but it didn't help at all. It went to the setup page and stuck there forever. However, when I switched to a good hard disk, it works fine. That means the machine is able to boot from CD ROM if the hard disk is good, but not this hard disk that has problem. I tried similar approach by using floopy disk to boot the machine, and it works fine for a good hard disk but not this bad one. Any more suggestions?? I really have no idea what should I do now. Please advice. thanks... |

I really have no idea what should I do now. Install the problem drive as a slave drive, get the drive manufacturer's utility from their web site and write zeros to the drive. Then install it as the primary drive and install windows on it. You might also want to run the drive manufacturer's diagnostics on the drive to make sure the drive is healthy. -- Rock [MVP - User/Shell] |

Rock,
thanks for your advice. If I install the problem drive as a slave drive, I think I need to change the jumper setting of the problem drive, do I need to have the good hard drive and install as a master drive? thanks again. > Rock Wrote: > Install the problem drive as a slave drive, get the drive manufacturer's > utility from their web site and write zeros to the drive. What I meant was install the problem drive in _another_ XP computer as a slave drive. Of course make certain it's cabled and jumpered properly. You don't want to move another running drive to a different computer and boot off it. -- Rock [MVP - User/Shell] |
