Default microhpone working halfway

os: WIN XP SP2
soundcard: ess es1868
so for the past month i’ce been tryintn to figure the problem out but
nada.
my computer recognizes the microphone. i can record and playback with
it. it’s perfectly functionable.
with msn messenger or yahoo messenger it works up to the point where i
test the calling & audio setting. it says it’s functionable. i can
see the bar going up and down as i talk into the mic with both
programms.
BUT when i try to make a call it shows that i ahve no mic connected to
the pc.
i never tried it with both progs at a time. i alwaysmake sure no
toehr prog is using it. i unmuted and all that jazz (PS i don’t have
an advance option under the mci setup).
i just reinstalled my OS to make sure it’s not it’s fault.
what could be the problem? is there anybody with a similar problem?
HELP!

thanks in advance you guys
