search-computer "semi" freezes

For the last couple of weeks everytime I go to start, then search, m
computer "semi" freezes. The time freezes, I cannot axcess anythin
from the tool bar, however, I can log on to the internet and othe
programs. I have run my computer for viruses, and everything seem
fine. After the freeze, I have to shut my computer off manually. An
ideas?
