Default Code 32 - audio driver

The sound on my computer stopped working as I was troubleshooting my webcam
using the Device Driver. The webcam issue is solved (being replaced by
Logitech) but my audio issue remains.

The driver in question is:
Microsoft WINMM WD Audio Compatibility Driver

It had error Code 32: A driver (service) for this device has been disabled.
An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)

I followed the instructions on Knowledge Base article 310123:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310123/en-us

which are as follows:
-----------------------
Code 32
A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver
may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)

Recommended resolution
The start type for this driver is set to disabled in the registry. Uninstall
the driver, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall or upgrade
the driver.

On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the
Troubleshooting Wizard. If the driver is required, and if reinstalling or
upgrading does not work, change the start type in the registry using Registry
Editor. For more information, see the Registry Reference in the Microsoft
Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit at:
-----------------------

When I uninstalled the driver, I was prompted to restart my computer, which
I did. I then returned to the Device Manager and scanned for hardware
changes. I was not prompted to reinstall or upgrade the driver. The driver
is no longer in the list of Sound, Video and Game controllers. I am unable
to reinstall or upgrade the driver, as instructed. A link for the Microsoft
Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit was not provided in the article in order for
me to attempt resolving the problem through the registry. With the driver
uninstalled, I’m not sure how editing the registry would be possible anyways.

Your help is greatly appreciated and urgently needed!
