Default IT8 Targets

Dumb question for some but if IT8 target color sheets for scanners
need to adhere to an industry standard, does this mean all makes of
these scannable references have the same number and pattern of colored
squares please? Do manufacturers make their own versions of the
"standard"?

The standard:
http://www.iso.org/iso/en/Catalogue...l?CSNUMBER=2079

Good image of the target:

Manufacturers do make their own targets. But they are made to the standard
specification.

Most sources resell targets they purchase from Kodak or Fuji, and they
are much more expensive than at <http://www.targets.coloraid.de/>.
Despite the lower price, Wolf Faust's targets are of high quality,
wide gamut, and accurate to the spec.

Fully agree with the above.

I bought some targets from him (Fuji films series + Ektachrome +
reflective).

They made a great difference and brought immediate advantages for both
Minolta 5400 and Coolscan 5000 scanners I own.

Thanks everyone - I assume a target would have to be sent by
mail/courier (ie from Germany), no use if sent online since we would
still have to print the thing (inaccurately)?

The physical targets that you purchase are created to meet the IT8
specification. There is no easy way to "print your own" with any degree of
accuracy or reliability (that is the service that you are paying for). So,
yes, you will need to receive them via mail/courier.

Once you have them, you can calibrate your various devices. For example,
once your scanner is calibrated, you can scan the card and print it on
your printer to create a printer profile and/or use it to calibrate your
monitor, although automatic monitor calibration tools (X-Rite, EyeOne,
etc.) eliminate the need to do this manually.

Regards,

Neil

I found that DDI Software it8 targets are the least expensive than most
of the other sites, Link:

However, it is only cheap if you already have the ProfilePrism software.

Correct, and they are the same as Wolf Faust's targets, because he
supplies them ;-)
