After nearly six years of very sterling service, I am having a problem with
my Epson Perfection 1640SU scanner. The scanner will still "Scan to Copy" using Epson's Smart Problem but any function requiring the use of Twain bombs out. When using Scan to File, Twain opens and does a pre scan, and the pre scanned document shows in the Twain preview panel, but when I press the "Scan" button, I get the message "File.exe has a problem and needs to close. A similar problem is experienced when trying to scan images using Paper Port and Microsoft Photo Draw My system is on Windows XP and I am using Epson Twain 5.53, which gave no problems previously. I have uninstalled reinstalled both the Scanner Twain and Epson Smart Panel, several times without result. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Bob |

Delete the files in %SystemRoot%\Twain_32\Scanner_Name\ %SystemRoot% is usually C:\Windows\ Reboot Install the Latest software from Epson. http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/...foType=Overview The latest is TWAIN Driver v5.71A (Rev. Thanks for your response, however, I tried your suggestion, but the problem
is still persisting. I also tried restoring Windows to a date when I knew that the scanner was working, but again no improvment. I would welcome any further advice. I also tried restoring Windows to a date when I knew >that the scanner was working, but again no improvment. I have had many issues with Epson installers and uninstallers for Windows. A few suggestions for what they're worth: 1. For Epson scanners: Dig down in the Advanced control menus for a button to Reset the scan driver to default values. I've seen crazy scan problems solved by that. Lord knows what it's trying to remember... Eg., on the 4990, select Professional Mode, then click Configuration, then the Other tab in the Config dialog and then the button "Reset All." Failing that, for Epson scanners or printers: 2a. Uninstall all Epson scanners and printers using the regular Windows uninstall tools (ie. from Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs.) 2b. Delete the EPSON subsection of the registry You will need to use regedt32, not regedit, and you will need to fiddle with permissions within regedt32 just to be able to kill the EPSON key. The key you need to kill is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\EPSON 3. Reinstall all Epson scanners and printers with fresh downloads from Epson's website. Note that USB enumeration and discovery must happen at exactly the right point in the process. In general the driver is installed BEFORE connecting and powering up the peripheral (ie the scanner or printer in question.) Use this information at your own risk, particularly items 2a and 2b. rafe b www.terrapinphoto.com |

Have you added or changed anything on the USB bus ? You might try a
different port or cable, dedicated. bob burke wrote: > Thanks for your response, however, I tried your suggestion, but the problem > is still persisting. My 1640SU worked fine for a couple of years and suddenly started
failing. I found that after I created a new userid I again was able to use it as before under that new ID. I eventually rebuilt my XP system and then everything worked fine under my normal ID. Using the an alternate ID kept me going until I had time to rebuild. bob burke wrote: > After nearly six years of very sterling service, I am having a problem with > my Epson Perfection 1640SU scanner.
