The easiest way of doing this is to install the temporary second hard
drive as the *master* drive on the secondary IDE channel.

With a "normal" PC configuration this is easily accomplished by
unplugging the data cable and power lead from the CD-ROM drive and
using these for the temporary second hard drive.

That avoids all complications with master/slave jumper settings and
also avoids the (relatively rare) situation when two drives just will
not work together in a master/slave configuration. This problem is
most often encountered when the two drives are from different
manufacturers and also were produced several years apart.
