Enable UDMA 100

Can someone tell me if Windows XP needs the registry
edited to enable udma or is Device Manager sufficient.

There is a lot of info out there saying udma is not
enabled in XP.

Windows XP handles UDMA 100 fine. However, if XP detects frequent read/write
errors on your disks it will lower the speed until the read/write errors
stops (or PIO mode has been reached). My IBM Deskstar do that from time to
time when the traffic on them is very high for a longer period of time. IBM
has later explained that their bigger Deskstars are not supposed to be on 24
hours per day and may overheat (which is my case). To restore the lowered
udma speed you need to reinstall the controller. That's all.
