Neither Outlook 2003 nor Outlook Express is an upgrade from the other. They are two completely different programs. You cannot read the data from one in the other without using the current program's import feature on the File menu.

hi sue,
thanks for the reply. Outlook, seems to have imported my e-mail settings
from outlook express. however, the "in box" and "sent" file are empty. I
tried doing a "file>import" and bringing in data from my outlook express
folder. It brought in the one address that I had kept in my address file,
but the import program said "zero" e-mail files were imported. Do you have
any advise on where these files could be, or how to recover them. I"m very
annoyed with MS for writing an install program that would delete my e-mail
files with out first asking. (and I feel it should have asked if I wanted to
import them.) thanks for all your help you fell you can provide.

I'm confused. Your subject says you went from Outlook 2003 to Express. Why then are you asking about importing Express data into Outlook?

Open Outlook Express. Do you see mail there in the Inbox and Sent Items folder?

In OE export mail to OL - on the same PC
As Sue states OE and OL are two completely different apps. Niether is an
upgrade to the existing email app. Consequently your origonal mail folders
are intact
In OL you can import mail settings and addressess. You can also import mail,
but the modified dates will be set to import date, so you should export from
OE

Installing Outlook does nothing at all to Express, except make it no longer the default email program. Maybe you did more than just a simple Outlook installation?
