Default Error 0x80071b90?? What gives?

I've just started getting this error and Defender doesn't start. There is
additional error information: "The system license has expired. Your logon
request is denied"

Weird! I also tried updating Defender via Microsoft.com but doesn't help.

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance

OK, just discovered why I was getting this message. My system date was set
to December 2003. Had been messing around a couple of days ago as I was
experiencing some probs with my PC and cleared the BIOS.... was sure that I
had set the date afterwards though.

Anyway, if anyone else gets this error then hopefully this will help.

Dave - what are the version numbers for Defender in Help, About?

Just looking for data points. In general, folks haven't spotted an
expiration mechanism in the current Defender code, but your post seems to
indicate that there is such a path in there somewhere. Thanks very much for
posting this--it is an oddball case, but it will likely happen to others as
well.

You aren't the first to have the clock set oddly-it'll happen.

Hi Bill, thanks for the response.

Version numbers as follows:

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1347.0
Engine Version: 1.1.1481.0
Definition Version: 1.14.1525.2

Defender seems to be working OK now since I set the clock correctly,
although I seem to have lost the icon in the system tray, the services are
all running and I do get alerts so not too worried about it.

Thanks again, Dave.

In another message which I read shortly after yours, a user had a far
distant date set, and had some other error message. Joe Faulhaber confirmed
that there is code to expire the beta program. I'm not sure what the
outcome of that other thread was--glad yours was easy to recover from.

Hi,

I encountered the same problem too. Initially, when it boot up, there is
this error:
Application failed to initialise: 0x800106ba. A problem caused Windows
Defender Service to stop.

Then i try to start the service manually by going to My Computer-> Manage->
Services. And start the service manually, i got the error:
Error 0x80071b90. The system license has expired. Your logon request is
denied.

1) I had not played with my system date at all. no change throughout.
2) Been using Windows defender for a few months. no issues at all.
3) Unable to start windows defender, how to check the version?

any ideas? any help is appreciated.

thanks!

I encountered the same problem too right after updating media player.
Initially, when it booted up, there is
this error:
Application failed to initialise: 0x800106ba. A problem caused Windows
Defender Service to stop.

Then i try to start the service manually by going to My Computer-> Manage->
Services. And start the service manually, i got the error:
Error 0x80071b90. The system license has expired. Your logon request is
denied.

deleted MSlicensing in regedit

1) I had not played with my system date at all. no change throughout.
2) Been using Windows defender for a 10 months. no issues at all.
3) Unable to start windows defender, how to check the version?
4) still not working
any ideas? any help is appreciated

thanks in advance

I have had EXACTLY the same problem. My system date is set correctly. And I
redownloaded the program as well. No joy. My husband's computer runs off
the same router as mine, and his Windows Defender is doing the same thing.
This seems to be something triggered by an update? What to do? I don't like
my computer being 'undefended' !!! Also, it's not showing the icon in the
lower right bar of my screen either, like it used to.

Default 0x80071b90 @ 12/31/2006

I guess I discovered the upper date to until which the program can function properly... Starting Windows Defender gave the same error as previously described (0x80071b90) and this problem can be resolved by setting the system clock to, say, the first of december and restarting the service...

Anyway :[ Guess I'll uninstall the program.

Just wanted to confirm this story.

Kind regards

P.s. point 2 in the Help-file: TIME-SENSITIVE SOFTWARE. The software will stop running on December 31, 2006. You will not receive any other notice. You will not receive any further updates when the software stops running.

I've had exactly the same problem, and am not at all comfortable with Windows
Defender not running. In Control Panel > Admin Tools > Services, WD is shown
as Disabled, but setting it to Automatic does not get it started. What's
happening? ... please.
