Default Unspecified Error Upon Startup

Hey gang....very frustrated in my first few days of trying to FINALLY
get moving on movie making on my PC! I've been trying to get Movie
Maker started and I keep getting an unspecified error. I've downloaded
SP2 twice and reinstalled it both times. Can someone please give me
some guidance other than downloading it again?

I've got the same issue with a Canon zr5mc except I get the "unspecified

If anyone solves this problem please past the solution.

At what point do you get the "unspecified error"?
When opening WMM?
When connecting DV cam to PC?
Supply exact details.

Downloaded SP2 twice??
What correalation are you making with the error and SP2?

In this thread, there are now 3 posters with same error,
but none supply enough details?
One poster details closing WMM via Device Manager? -
This is not possible, I suspect he meant Task Manager?

Assuming you are all getting the "Unspecified error" when
connecting DV camera - You will only get good capture
results via Firewire.
Detail exactly what it is you are doing when the error
message occurs.

I get the "UNSPECIFIED ERROR" message everytime I attempt to capture video.
Control of the camcorder is complete except for capturing.

I'm afraid I have to be blunt, you are too vague and the details are
non-existant, you haven't grasped what "exact details" requires?
Firewire? How is the cam connected? Is It DV?
With PC powered up and DV connected, when you switch on
does XP recognise the hot pluged device and give you options?

My apology, I have posted threads in a couple of other sites. I checked to
see if I supplied details and discovered I had not. So here they are.....

Hardware: Toshiba Satellite A65-S1762, Canon ZR50MC, Techgear 1394 Firewire
3-port bus

Software: Windows XP Professional, Moviemaker 2.1, Intervideo WinDVD
Creator for Toshiba

In both application I have control of the camera (connected via firewire).
MM gives unspecified error whenever I attempt to capture video. The camera
continues to play tape.

Intervideo get closer, capture appears to take place. There is no image
genrated in the preview screen. When capturing is stoped a DVI file is
created. When I attempt to open the resulting DVI file I get an error
message stating that the file may be corrupt or too short to play.

This maybe caused by incompatible filters installed by other software.
So initially, we are going to try disabling/enabling filters in WMM 2.1.
Turning off filters in WMM will not effect them in other applications.

1) Open WMM, click: Tools/Options, then click the Compatibilty tab

2) Listed maybe several filters, as you've detailed interVideo, that filter
will be listed? Also DirectShow. This process of turning Off/On filters
will now be trial and error to eliminate possible problematic settings.

3) To turn Off, clear checkbox, to turn On, select checkbox.

4) You may find several listed that appear to be titled the same, these
are different versions, Initially try by disabling all apart from Windows
filters.

5) This trial and error process can be quite laborious. Each time you
disable/Enable, try capture etc.

You are right, I meant Task manager. I have a new Dell 5150 with windows XP
media edition fully up to date with patches. I connect a Panasonic NV-GS180
via Firewire. I have tried both the Dell supplied IEEE1394 card and a card of
my own but both give the same error. Device manager correctly shows the
device. MyDVD LE supplied pre-installed says 'no video signal'. Moviemaker
works sometimes and other times gives 'unspecified error' when you hit next
from the capture method screen. I have tried a canon camcorder which uses the
same driver and that works with MyDVD and WMM. Yeserday my panasonic worked
perfectly on my own computer and on one in the shop where I bought the
camera! Today it is giving unspecified error except on a couple of occassions
where it started the capture but with an all black preview window.

Hello,
I am having a the same error. When I select "Capture from video
device" I get the error "The video device cannot be used at this time because
there has been an error when starting the device" When I check Tools,
Options, Compatibility there are no files listed in the window for me to
see. When I hit Restore All Defaults, nothing happens either.

Cheers,

Brent
