Default Effects gone

I have Windows Movie Makers 2.1, and I have had it for a long time without
any problems.

Recently I opened it and all my effects and transitions were gone except for
'Speed-up Double' and 'Slow-down half'

I think what might have caused the problem is Windows Media Player 11 Beta,
or Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2, both of which I downloaded a little while ago.

I was going to try reinstalling Movie Maker, but I decided I wouldn't,
because I would have to download SP2 again.

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem, and if there is
an easy way of fixing it.

I didn't lose my transitions when I installed either of those Betas.
You could either try reregistering the DLL's (Instructions on my website
WMM -> Trouble Shooting) or
you could use Windows Restore to go to a restore point before installing the
Betas.

I followed the steps on your website to reregister the Dll's.
I noticed that there are 3 more Dll's than the ones listed on your website.
They are:
wmmfilt.dll
wmmres.dll
wmmutil.dll

This is the entire contents of C:\Program Files\Movie Maker:

1033 (folder)
MUI (folder)
Shared (folder)
creativity_mmfull.exe
moviemk.exe
OLDB1.tmp
sample.asf
sample.wmv
wmm2ae.dll
wmm2eres.dll *
wmm2ext.dll
wmm2filt.dll
wmm2fxa.dll
wmm2fxb.dll
wmm2res2.dll *
wmm2res.dll *
wmmfilt.dll
wmmres.dll *
wmmutil.dll *

The Dll's with the * beside them did not register properly. When I tried to
register them, is said:

C:/Program Files/Movie Maker/ *.dll was loaded, but the DllRegisterServer
entry point was not found.
This file can not be registered.

I have investigated this problem before with mixed success of a solution.

Are you using Vision 6 software from GenevaLogic by any chance? It is known
to cause this issue. There is a fix:
http://www.genevalogic.com/phpmyfaq...el&cat=1&id=118

Another thing that was previously reported to be connected to this was Cisco
VPN software.

Not all DLLs are registerable. So dont worry about those which did not
register.
Also try my batch file to re-register the DLLs.

I don't have Vision 6 or Cisco VPN software.
I tried running the batch file, but that didn't solve the problem.
Is there a file somewhere where all the effects and transitions are kept?

These are implemented in the DLLs found in Movie maker folder.

The only thing that remains to be tried from my list of recommended
solutions is to re-install SP2. If you try it please let us know the result.

Or try copying the DLL's from your i386 directory overwriting the ones
currently in the /Movie Maker folder.
The reason BTW that the other 3 DLL's are not listed is because they don't
get registered.

Default Re: Effects gone

I have still been trying to work out this problem. So far what I have found
is, 2 registry files that contain all of the effects and transitions:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ActiveMovie\devenum\{CC7BFB42-F175-11D1-A392-00E0291F3959}

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ActiveMovie\devenum\{CC7BFB43-F175-11D1-A392-00E0291F3959}

I noticed that when I open Windows Movie Maker, it deletes all of the
registry files in these folders, deleting all of the effects, except for
speed up and slow down.

I have come across a registry fix that replaces these missing files, however
they are still deleted when Movie Maker is opened.

I tried searching for the registry files to see if anyone else has had
spyware or virus problems or something with these files, but I didn't find
any. What I did find though is that they have something to do with qedit.dll
, which is found in the c:\WINDOWS\system32 folder.

I tried renaming this dll to see how Movie Maker would work without it, but
I didn't notice any difference. When I went to rename the dll back to
qedit.dll, it told me that there was already a file named that. It seems that
the dll was replaced as soon as I renamed it. This could be the dll that I am
having problems with. I still need to find out exactly what is deleting the
registry files.

If anyone could help at all, that would be very much appreciated.
Thanks, Mike

Default Re: Effects gone

I have just made another important discovery. I tried replacing the registry
files that are deleted by Movie Maker, then I unregistered qedit.dll. I then
opened Movie Maker and all of my effects and transitions were back! But... I
tried putting a clip onto the timeline and adding an effect to it, which
seemed to work but Movie Maker wouldn't play any video. So I saved the clip
with the effect, closed Movie Maker, then registered qedit.dll. I opened
Movie Maker up again and opened the clip that I had just saved. I was able to
pay the clip and the effect did work, but I couldn't add more effects once
again.

Until I can figue out how to get qedit.dll to stop erasing the effect files,
I will have to unregister the dll and replace the registry files to add
effects to my clips.
If anybody knows how I can fix this problem from here, could you please help
me out? Thanks,
Mike
