Default Codecs

I've managed to take a bunch of tapes from my camcorders, captured in
MM, done a lot of editing, with titles, chapters, etc. and burned to DVD
using Ulead DVD Workshop. I ended up with DVDs that play fine on my
computer and a few TVs, so I must have done something right without
knowing it. I know from nothing about codecs, but there's a lot of talk
about them on this and other forums. I have read several of the web
sites, know what form my DVD is via GSpot, but have as yet do not have a
good understanding as to where codec files should be stored on my hard
drive so they're available when I run into different extension type as I
play with input from different sources.

Can someone PLEASE either spell it out in terms that this old phart can
understand, or point me to a source like "Codecs for Dummies"?

TIA....................Jim
