Default Volume Works in Ctl Panel but can't Display Volume Control in Task

When I open the Sounds & Devices Properties window and check the box beside
"Place Volume Icon in the Taskbar", I receive the following error message:
"Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the Volume
Control program has not been installed. To install it, use the Add/Remove
Programs in the Control Panel."
Where should I get whatever file/program that I need to add? If the missing
file is a part of Windows, how do I install a single file without
reinstalling Windows?

Thanks for your response Wesley. Unfortunately, these steps failed to solve
the problem. The instructions were simple to follow, but I received an error
message
each time I completed the sequence of steps. E:\I386>was on the left
margin. Immedately to its right, I typed
expand sndvol32.ex_c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe and then pressed the
enter key. I received the following message:
"The system cannot find the patch specified."
Windows is intalled on my C drive and the Windows XP disk was on my E drive,
so I cannot understand what went wrong. Do you have any other ideas or
solutions to my problem? Thanks.

sndvol32.ex_c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe

There needs to be one space between
expand
and
sndvol32.ex_
and one space between
sndvol32.ex_
and
c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe

This line will probably wrap and not appear correctly:

expand e:\i386\sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe

Hey, it didn't wrap here. Spaces are just a critical as typing the correct
characters.

Here's another way to expand a file.

Method 1: Use Expand File in Msconfig.exe
To use Expand File in Msconfig.exe, follow these steps:
1. Insert your Windows XP installation disk into your CD drive or DVD drive.
2. Click Start, click Run, type Msconfig, and then click OK.
3. On the General tab, click Expand File.
4. In the File to restore box, type the name of the file you want to expand.
Or, to locate the file you want to replace, click Browse File, and then
click Open.
5. In the Restore from box, type the path from which to restore the file.
Or, to locate the source file you want to expand on your Windows XP
installation disk, click Browse From, and then click Open.
6. If the Save file in box is not already populated from step 4, type the
path to which you want the file to be restored. Or, to locate the
destination folder you want to expand the file into, click Browse To, and
then click OK.
7. Click Expand.
