System Disk Error on boot up

What are the chances of recovering data from a hard drive in an HP
compaq nc6230 laptop after receiving "system disk error, please insert
CD and press any key" The OS is XP Pro.

I ran the Hard drive utility tool from the BIOS to check that the hard
drive was good, all came back clean. I put the hard drive into another
laptop of the same make and model and received the same error messege,
system disk error.

I am unable to open the shell to remove the CMOS battery and replace as
I am not authorized repairer and I dont want to void the warranty on
the machine so that is out of the question

I was unable to recover data by using the factory CD to repair any
problems.

I am currently in a vicious cycle of the machine going to the screen
showing the safe mode options, but after selecting one of the options
it cycles back to starting up again, it will not go into safe mode or
any of the other options. There is a blue screen pop but goes by in
the blink of an eye so I am unable to pull the exact error messege from
it.

Can i put the hard drive into an external drive casing for laptop hard
drives and recover the data from there?

Or do you have any other recommendations to try to recover any data
form the drive? or is the data on that hard drive lost?

Can the data be rocovered by plugging the hard drive into an external
case, set the pins so the drive acts as a slave and still be able to
recover data?

Yes, there are adapters to adapt laptop harddrives to use IDE ports.

Not exactly sure why you don't think the UBCD will work? It boots
independently of the OS on the laptop meaning that you can get to the
data. I do this all the time for our remote guys with their Dell
laptops.

In fact, if you are licensed to use Ghost32, you can run it right from
this CD with network support. If a laptop hard drive is going bad, I
just Ghost it to a network drive and then Ghost it back after you get
the new drive in.

Unfortunately we are not on a network at this time, nor do we have
ghost, so both of those are out for the time being. I just wanted to
know if after receiving a system disk error if you could recover data
from that hard drive by using an external drive

when we are on our network
