how do i trim audio files?

How do i trim audio files, that is i have a file that is about an hour some
long and i would like to split it in several smaller tracks and then burner
it on to a CD-R?

what software would i use to do this?

The tools will depend on your file types, but if you google for "mp3
splitter" then you'll find many options.
