Setting a static IP address

Is there a document that describes how to set a static IP address for use
with a router? Just assigning an IP address does not cut it.

I have a DLink DI-524 and wish to set up control over a specific PC on the
LAN to restrict internet access.

As long as the static IP address is within the address range of the router's
domain, and outside the DHCP range, assigning the address on the computer should
work fine.

How does the IP address assignment affect Internet access?

What you may have to do is NOT set up that computer with TCP/IP, but use a
nonroutable protocol like NETBEUI instead...

Don't know whether your Dlink router supports reservations such that the
same IP address can always be assigned to a specific computer. However, the
router does support MAC address filtering, so you can configure the client
to obtain an address from the router and then block/control Internet access
based upon its MAC address. See the manual:

You could assign an IP outside the DHCP range---or at the high end. That's
what I did for my network, where the router does DHCP, but I wanted one or 2
computers to always be this or that so I could run a web server or ftp
server
