Default Announcing Windows Defender (Beta 2) Refresh

Windows Defender (Beta 2) Refresh - build 1347 has just been released.

This release includes many bug fixes and enhancements including:
· The option to always display the Windows Defender icon in the
taskbar notification area. This is one of the biggest customer feedback
issues we have received so we are implementing this request.

· Definition update delivery improvements. We have also included
changes to help address the major concerns that customers had around staying
up to date with definition updates.

· SpyNet data collection improvements - allowing Microsoft to
produce more effective definitions to help combat malware,

· Definition quality improvements - with every release, Microsoft
enhances the quality of our definitions ensuring that descriptions, advice,
category, alert level, and recommended actions are up to date to provide
better protection.

· Text improvements in the UI and localization and globalization
fixes to support Japanese and German releases.

You can download the latest copy from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsdefender

Thanks, Mike.

Users who normally select advanced Spynet membership should be aware that
the install process will set you back to basic membership, so it's a good
idea to revisit both the Spynet membership area of Tools, and the Options
area--to see what's different, and check that your old choices have been
preserved.

Two problems firstly found downloading new build extremely difficult ?
download stops after 89% and refuses to go further ! after three hours
finally succeeded on one machine ! still trying on second 20 hrs so far and
no luck !
However installed 1347 on 1st machine without problems ! updated ok ! but
having recived another definitions update today ref:- 1396.12. I find no
improvement in updating ! in fact worse ! an error message :- unable to
install, so back to windows install cleaner etc before succesfully updating
the definitions ! I had completly uninstalled previous version before
installing 1347, and had hoped to try a installtion without on my second
machine unfortunatly its still trying to down load 1347 at regular intervals
without success ?

I clicked on 'check for updates' in the 'About' page of WD but was advised of
no updated engine. Will the 1347 update not be available that way? Or better,
made part of Windows Auto Update?
If I choose to download it from the MS page you link, do I simply instal it
right over the existing 1303 engine version I currently have?
Thanks

At present, the update must be downloaded directly--in the future there will
be a button in the Help, About area, I believe, that will allow you to
choose such updates explicitly. There are several Microsoft posts yesterday
giving some background on this.

You can download and run--it will upgrade what you have in place. After the
install, revisit your Spynet membership level, and the settings in
Options--there are new ones, and you should recheck your old ones as well.

Thanks Bill. Downloaded now and working fine. I was surprised to see the tray
icon is not default but has to be set, still at least it's back.

They've said all along that the default will remain the original design--no
icon. But the choice is there. I don't expect to check that option for any
of the installs I do--I like the new design.

Mike
I have installed the latest build but still do not show WD icon in taskbar
notification area. How do I get the icon to show? Thanks.

Go to Tools, Options, and use the scroll bar on the right side of the window
to scroll down--the option is fairly near the end, as I recall--under Real
Time protection options--"Choose when Windows Defender icon appears in the
notification area."
