Default Unable to run signature update

When I click on update to update signature a hear a little pop but nothing
happens. I have been able to download the signatures through the link
supplied in this forum and update defender, but the update button still does
not work.

Any ideas?

This sounds as though you've turned balloon notices off.

If you follow this KB article's logic, it recommends a setting of 0 (zero)
for a particular registry location to turn balloon tips off. I believe that
setting that location to 1 should turn them back on again.

That may get you a visible message indicating what is happening--but it is
possible that such a message is also in your system event log--you might try
an update attempt and then check the system event log for events with source
"windefend"

Additionally: Have you been to Windows Update and done an express scan, and
applied all offered critical updates?

Is this a home machine, or one on a corporate network?

Have you read my response to BillF's message? What happens when you try the
things I advised? What are your answers to the questions I asked?
