Default move existing site into sub-site

Hi, we have an existing live website that has a sub-site that has password
access. Now we want to basically create a new Index(main) page... and move
all the former main site content into the sub-site. I tried the logical,
selecting and trying to drag, or copy, the existing files into the sub-site
folder- won't let me do this. What is the proper way to do this? Another
note... though I feel not related... is that the we'll want to attach a
dynamic web tempate to the new Index page on the main site. I assume you can
have different dynamic, static, and no templates to different
sites/sub-sites? Again the goal is to create a new Index page and move all
former main web site content behind the password protected sub-site. Thanks
in advance - Dodge

The best way is to publish the root web (do not publish subwebs) to
the subweb, then delete unwanted content from the root web (do not
delete the _private or images folders, but the files in them may be
deleted).

You can have as many DWTs as you wish in any web or subweb. The
subweb will require its own DWT(s) (or copies of those used in the
root web), since a DWT can only be used in the web that contains it.

Ron, just to be clear, I would go File - Publish Site - then publish it to
the File location of the subweb... then remove unused items from prior main
site, add or change the Index (main page)? Is this the proper/best way to
accomplish our need?
Thanks -- Dodge

If I understood your original post correctly, this is the way to go.
