Default 9600 Pro fan died

is it ok to use the card without a fan? Where can I get a reasonable priced
replacement?

Interesting. I just assumed that if my fan dies my card fries. What
are the symptoms when the fan dies? Noise? Flicker? Should I expect
any advance warning?

The fans rarely stop altogether initially. As the bearings/bushings dry
out, they start slowing down, whir/whine/shimmy/buzz and generally make
bad sounds. Things are now running warmer so you should find a
replacement soon. Electronics mail order (Digi-Key, Mouser and others)
or your local parts supplier probably has a suitable replacement. If
the fan totally stops, you're on borrowed time. Shut it down and fix it
now or be ready to replace the whole card.

Thanks for the info. My fan is still running fine -- no problems. It's
just nice to learn that when the day comes that I start hearing
suspicious noises, I'll still have time to repair the card without
having to replace it.

When a fan on one of my cards was dying, I had green blocks
start appearing at random when the card heated up.

When my 9700 was dying, first sympton was Google Earth crashed the
computer - black screen and PC turned off. Then there were random crashes,
screen would turn multi-coloured then computer would turn off. Then screen
just went black and computer would continue to run (to the extent you could
tell with a black monitor). At the same time, a series of beep errors (2
long, 8 short I think) on boot, then no beeps. Turned out the fan had
dropped off the card which, in turn, had fried.

My 9600 PRO can overheat now and then if even the heat sink compound is
getting old/dry. Now and then I pull off the HSF assembly and re-apply.
Don't take the fan off or run without it or you will likely damage your
card. I re-greased the bearings in my fan 18 months ago and it is holding
on fine! But if you don't want to fiddle with it, there are many
after-market spares to be had mail order. I believe even PC World now
stocks a suitable 40mm fan assembly (I might be wrong but I thought I saw
it on the rack). If you Google "9600 replacement heat sink fan" you will
be swamped with retailers and tips. The sink clips to the card via two
plastic pegs (in most cases) and those are slightly fiddly, but it's no
big deal really.
