I'm not able to update Windows defender (Beta 2). Microsoft OneCare
constantly tells me that Defender is out of date, tells me to go to the Microsoft Update page and run a scan. When I do that, I am told that Defender definition updates are already downloaded and ready to install (1 update, 0 KB, 0 minutes). The definition that is ready is "Definition Update 1.14.1361.6 for BETA Windows Defender (KB915597). I am told this is a High Priority download, but for the last 2 weeks I've not been able to update Defender. How do I know that any of my other Microsoft programs are being properly scanned and updated? I've contacted OneCare support multiple times, but have yet to receive any response from them about this problem. Your help will be greatly apprecaited. Tor-Eddie |

Please try the resolution steps in this KB article, even though the cause
stated may not apply: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=915105 -- "toreddie" <toreddie@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:F260C8F1-ECBD-4777-B6E5-1263EC08D9D7@microsoft.com... > I'm not able to update Windows defender (Beta 2). I have the same problem. I found by surfing in the forum that I had to delete the old definitions in the C:/documents and settings/all users/microsoft/WD/definitons and now its worst than ever, even uninstalling from setup.exe and reinstalling gives me this error code 0x80070663 and that "the patch package could not be opened". I don't understand, and it's very frustrating. Upon uninstall, I deleted every WD folder remaining and even cleaned the registry with ABEXO free registry utility... I followed Bill's recommendation and tried the steps in the KB article. Shut
down the computer, rebooted and started WD again, and there was no message telling me the definitions were x days old. So far so good. I will continue to monitor closely since this may not be the permanent fix I was really looking for. Thanks. This is not a permanent fix.

I haven't found it necessary to dig that far into things.
The thing I would think of in your situation is the Windows Installer cleanup utility, and using it to remove "Windows Defender Signatures." http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;290301 -- "Winspy" <Winspy@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:4B77EA8D-908B-4162-871D-E6E57EE7F55A@microsoft.com... > > I have the same problem.
