Hi Evan,
The spinning cubes are a little odd as an error, and I think that is why nobody has replied to your post yet. However, I'll post here what I suggest you try, and remember XP came with DX 8.1 .. you shouldn't expect to see a DX 7 reference during the tests. If this doesn't help you however, please post back with information about the exact problem you encounter after you start the games. :-) Updating video card drivers can solve most gaming issues. Me & XP users should create a restore point before any upgrades: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...stemrestore.asp Before you update your drivers, I recommend you upgrade to DirectX 9.0a: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...&displaylang=en Keep any download accelerators or antivirus programs disabled. Here are the steps I recommend you use to update your driver: 1. To identify the make and model of your card, right click your Desktop, choose Properties / Settings / Advanced / Adapter. 2. Download the latest video driver for your card online, using http://www3.sympatico.ca/nibblesnbi...eo.html#drivers to find the website to download from. I also have advanced video driver and direct X troubleshooting steps on that page. 3. Save the .exe driver (or uncompress the zip file) to a folder in My Documents named after the driver version number. 4. Restart the computer in Safe Mode by pressing the F8 key about once every second as it's rebooting to pick Safe Mode. 5. Click Start / (settings) Control Panel / System / Hardware Device Manager / expand +Display Adapters / right click on the adapter, pick "Uninstall", and click No if asked to reboot. 6. Use Control Panel / Add-Remove programs to uninstall the previous driver (exe)software which may have been installed. 7. Restart the computer in Safe Mode by pressing the F8 key about once every second as it's rebooting to pick Safe Mode. 8. If the driver is a (exe)program file, GO DIRECTLY TO step 10. 9. When Windows prompts you to install the video adapter,* click "Install from a list or specific location", click the "Browse" button, browse to the My documents folder where you saved the driver, click on one of the driver files to begin installation. Go to Step 11. * If Windows doesn't prompt you to install the video adapter, click Start / Control Panel / System / Hardware / Device Manager / click the + next to Display Adapters / Doubleclick the Adapter / Update Driver... / follow the instructions in Step 9 to install driver. 10. If / when Windows prompts you to install the video adapter, click "Cancel". Double click the driver program to install the new drivers.. 11. After you reboot, go to Control Panel / Display / Settings and choose 32 bit Color Quality, and 1024x768 Screen Resolution. TROUBLESHOOTING: Test your drivers using DXDiag: Click Start / Run / type: DXDIAG Click the "Test" buttons in the Display, Sound, Music & Network Tabs; If any of the Display options are Disabled and you cannot Enable them, your most likely solution would be to update your Chipset Drivers as per: http://www3.sympatico.ca/nibblesnbits/Video.html#v11 Along with your Video card, Sound Cards, Motherboard Chipsets, and Video Monitors may also require updated drivers. Even your motherboard's BIOS may need to be updated for compatibility with your Video card. These steps are listed at: http://NibblesNbitsVideo.tk The latest video drivers sometime don't work with a particular game. (Check the Video suggestions in the readme.txt file in your game folder/CD) If there's no suggestions, try an older (WHQL) driver, and/or if you still experience problems try a Beta driver, or even an Omega driver instead: BETA Drivers: http://download.guru3d.com/ OMEGA Drivers: http://www.omegacorner.com/ Do you have more than one video outlet on your card? If so, test the monitor using other outlet and disable the 2nd outlet if that doesn't help. There you have it, if you have any questions feel free to post them! :-) -- Cheers, Jimmy S. He didn't reply but I will since I have the same problem.
First of all, the "spinning cube problem" is not a problem in itself but it is supposed to be the BEST symptom any Microsoft tech support could hope for since it's coming from the only diagnostic tool available to users. Dxdiag tests downward compatibilities up to Directx 7.x so there is a D3D test for DX7, DX8 and DX9 with barely detectable speed increases from one to the other. So I ran dxdiag because most of my DirectX games stopped working. I will cite only two: Freelancer and Warcraft III. The in-game symptoms: many textures are replaced by BIG triangles (not fitting in the screen) and the performance drops to unplayable speeds. I will post the dxdiag output at the end of this message but to save some time, I will first tell you what I tried to fix the problem. My card: ATI All-In-Wonder 7500. I had the Catalyst 3.6 Drivers. I think the problem started there because to install an optional software (the Multimedia Center), it required me to install Directx 9.0... which I did (BIG mistake, if you ask me!). I also have the latest BIOS and VIA Hyperion 4in1 drivers. So I played with most settings (enabling/disabling z-buffers, w-buffers... etc.), returing to defaults, lowering hardware acceleration one level at a time up to the point where Direct3d was not available anymore. One dxdiag after each setting change (and reboot when prompted). No improvment. Then I gave up and tried downgrading to the 3.5 drivers. With those installed everything comes back to default (again) but to no avail. Here again, I lowered the Hardware acceleration up to three notches with a dxdiag between each. Big triangles instead of spinning cube again. Finally, I downgraded to the supposedly stable 3.2 drivers (I had heard beforehand that the 3.4 drivers were unstable). I think I have seen enough triangles in 3 days. So, here goes nothing. I decided to keep the 3.2 drivers for now (unless they crash on me when I play Solitaire or MSHearts). I therefore paste my latest dxdiag readout for Jimmy S. or anyone who can help someone who is considering a sad but efficient System Restore, Windows Repair or "format c:" as last resort. ------------------ System Information ------------------ Time of this report: 8/4/2003, 03:17:05 Machine name: PETER Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) (2600.xpclnt_qfe.021108-2107) Language: English (Regional Setting: English) System Manufacturer: VIA Technologies, Inc.
