What is Microsoft.NET Framework?

Hi Gang,

Prior to installing Norton Ghost 9.0, a cue came up asking to install
Microsoft.NET.

I installed it, but my computer seemed to slow down on restarts and I
was now required to select a "user" and password.

I promptly removed .NET pending more investigation. The .NET website
indicates the program is used to enhance web services or development.
But I couldn't grasp things like "self-describing software modules,
semantically encapsulating discrete functionality".

So, what does this Microsoft.NET do in terms of Norton Ghost? Is .NET
that much of a resource hog, or is it just me?

The .net framework is a runtime file needed to run programs written with
..net. It's roughly analogous to the old vbrunXXX.dll files needed to run
programs written in Visual Basic. Because .net is relatively new, there
aren't yet a lot of programs that use it. A few months ago I had none. Today
I have three. Even if you don't run any of these programs now, it's likely
that you will soon, so my recommendation is that you might as well get and
keep this, so it will be there when you need it.

..NET is a programming language. Right now there are three .NET versions 1.0,
1.1, and 2.0 (the first two also have updates).

You need .NET to run any program written using it as a programming language.
For instance, I have an ATI video card and I need .NET installed to install
their Catalyst Control Center.

It is similar to needing the Visual Basic runtimes for programs written
using VB.

I have iunstalled all three and have not noticed any problems with slow
downs, restarts, etc that could be attributed to any of the .NETs.

Hello Jerry
I thought that sounded familiar - .Net.
As soon as you mentioned Ati Gpu & the Cat.
I thought I had it installed on the system I had last year.
But I have an nVidia Gpu now - does that need .Net.
If I knew where to look for it, I would.

Thanks for reply - yes I will.
If I had it though, I assume I should find it in Add/Remove progs - well it
isn't.
