Default Default Settings Not Remembered

In some applications (WinFax and Internet Explorer so far, but not Word,
Excel, WordPerfect and numerous others) each time I want to print I have to
go into properties of the selected printer and choose A4 because it keeps
setting 216x269 (which I think is letter).

Obviously I have set the printer driver in printers and faxes to A4 and all
other programs realise this and correctly default to A4. Does anyone know why
this is occuring and how to fix it. The number of times I forget to change it
and get my prints clipped off with an extra page of printer error code is
infuriating.

The printer is installed as a local device on a fake LPT port which is then
mapped on startup to the shared printer on the server using the net use
command. The printer is one of nine machines all installed and mapped
similarly, but it is the only one which exhibits this behaviour. I have also
tried it as an actual local device on LPT1 and USB with the same results. It
is a HP LaserJet 1200 and I am using the latest XP compliant driver from the
HP website. I have XP Pro SP2 fully patched with the server being XP Home SP2
fully patched.

I am also seeking resolution of this issue on the HP forums and will post
here any solution I find there.

I no not know about the LJ1200 but all of the laserjets I have used lately
allow you to set this kind of default in the printer. Break out your manual
and read up on settings that you can make to this printer.

Thank You

Thanks,

This is not a hardware issue as most programs work fine. At worst it is a
printer driver issue, but I suspect it is more likely a software issue. I can
add to the list of non-remembering programs Windows Notepad.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Default RE: Default Settings Not Remembered

It still could be the printer causing this, if it is set to a default that is
not A4 then when a program prints to it that does not have A4 set in page
setup then it will print using the printers defaults. Worth a look to see
what the printer defaults are set to. You can more in likely printout the
printer defaults.

Default RE: Default Settings Not Remembered

Para 2 of my original post clearly says this has already been done. The fact
is that the printer defaults ARE set to A4, but for some reason certain
programs switch to 216x279.

Default RE: Default Settings Not Remembered

I have ran into to this as well. Word will use the paper size set on the
printers, where notepad will not. Notepad will accept the paper size if you
set that printer to the default printer, but not if you chose it from the
list of printers. It will change paper size on all printers other than the
default printer to Letter or to what the default printer is set to. I'm
still trying to figure this out.
