XP does not recognize hd after reboot

Ok, the thing is this...

I have a Dell Precision 670, SCSI drive and a IDE DVD-burner on the primary
IDE-bus. I put in a 120 GB IDE-drive on the secondary IDE-bus. At that moment
I didn't have an 80-pin IDE-cable so I used a 40-pin instead. So far so good.
BIOS recognizes the drive. Windows also recognizes the drive...I can shut
down and restart the computer and I have no problem at all. Then I ordered a
bunch of 80-pin cabels and when I got them I changed the 40-pin cable I used
to get the drive going.

Now the problem starts.

When I start the computer and goes into the BIOS the drive is recognized
just fine, but when Win XP is loaded the drive is not found by windows (not
in disk management nor in device manager). To access the drive I have to run
the "Scan for hardware changes" in the device manager. The drive is found and
I can use it normally...until next time I reboot. This happens everytime I
reboot! Ok...my computer is mostley on but it's a pain in the *** to do it
when I have to reboot...Any suggestions?

OS: Win XP sp2 + lots of fixes
DVD is master and at the end of the cable on primary ide
IDE-HD is master and at the end of the cable on secondary ide

Couple things to try.
In BIOS, refresh the ESCD.
In Device Manager remove the drive and any Hidden instances, and allow
the drive to reinstall.

Thanks Bob for the tips....but those were the fist things I tried myself...

However stubborn as I am I once again (third och fourth time now, I think)
removed the drive, checking cabling and jumpers and there it was...A small
piece of metal had gotten loose from an old jumper and stayed in place in the
jumper-block on the drive! The disk was strapped to be a "Master with
slave"... I got rid of the small metal-piece and now everything wokes as it
should.
