Windows XP Home hangup on it's first boot up

Just few hours ago I determined to re-installed my XP Home (originally
installed under C:\WINDOWS) from CD. I instructed the program to
re-install XP Home anew under C:\WINDOWS again & delete files there
before re-installation. Everything went smooth except at the first boot
after installation completed. XP hangup just before login screen popped
up.

Initially I doubted it's because some uncleaned files still existed in
old C:\WINDOWS so I repeated installation under a different directory
C:\WINXP. However, the same problem repeated. I'd changed 2 mouses to
verify if problem was due to my hardware (one serial port mouse, one
PS/2 mouse) but the problem didn't go away.

It's also strange that booting both XP installation into safe mode was
successful except the mouse pointer frozen up when I used serial port
mouse (this wasn't a new problem because it already existed in my old
XP installation). Besides, I could play games after I booted XP using
safe mode with P/S mouse connected.

Also, I found one BIOS error message "Serial Presence Detect (SPD) data
missing or inconclusive" appeared. My motherboard H/W was Intel
SE440BX-2 with 3x128MB PC100 RAM modules (one of them was actually
PC133 but Intel motherboard could accomodate it as PC100).

Its Peripheral Configuration was below:

Serial Port A: [Enabled]
Base I/O address: [3E8]
Interrupt: [IRQ 4]
Serial Port B: [Auto]
Mode: [Normal]
Parallel port: [Auto]
Mode: [Bi-directional]

Legacy USB Support: [Disabled]

I would like to know how my installation problem could be solved ?

It appears you are trying to install XP into another directory on your C:
drive. This frankly is suicidal. If you want to re-install windows xp the C
partition needs to be reformatted so that it gets rid of everything and you
start afresh. But before you do that make sure you have backups of all you
important documents.

You don't say whether you have a retail copy of XP or recovery disks. I'm
assuming a retail copy. Before you do anything else visit my website

Why ? Windows doesn't allow installing twice in 2 different directories
? If so why it allows multi boot i.e. Copies of windows XP / ME / 98
etc available for users to boot with ?

That's the point. I have files inside the HD. That's why I didn't
choose to reformat the partition. I think now I have to make this disk
a slave disk of another PC so that I can move all data files out.

All re-installation attempts were made from XP CD.

Oops! I remember now, Windows put some important startup files at each
boot partition's root directory. Installing 2 Windows OS of same
version may trigger unexpected behaviour. Was that what you mean ?

Best is to put any additional OS's you want on different physical hard
disks.

You remembered correctly. Installing two copies on the same root directory
will trigger unexpected behaviour. As i said in my first post, save any
important files/documents that you might need and then reformat during the
initial install process. Just make sure you have any drivers you may need
(modem etc) at hand for installing after you have re-installed XP. You don't
always need the driver disk because XP has a number of generic drivers that
support quite a lot of hardware, but you may have installed new hardware
recently, new printer or something like that, that came with it's own driver
and you may need to reinstall that.

Hi I bought new acer laptop three weeks ago, its been working perfectly till
2 days ago. I have windows xp installed when I bought it, I o not atually
have the disk and I havent yet burnt a copy of the back up from the system. I
have notron installed (its still on learning mode) but it says tht the system
is good. I downloaded spybot and ad-ware to also help secure the system and
all those tools say there is nothing wong with the sytem.

the problem Im experiencing is, when I start the computer:

it will not start automatically and take me to the log in page

The blue bar travelsonly 1 inch accross the bottom of the screen, I have to
ush any other buttons to get it to boot.

If I try to use the f2 button to entre set up, it will not recognise the
request

On booting just before the windows xp window aprears a message appears
saying the the hard disk, drives have not been checked.

On sight of the windows xp window, the alarm bell rings constantly.

The on line help window appears afterwards and opens the help page, up to
190 pages at a time nd freezing my ram so that the computer is disabled.

I have drfraged, I have done system scan, disk clean up, I used help to
restore to earlier dates, but nothing has worked. I think I need to override
the system with a new copy of xp home, instaling its original defaults.

Can you help or recommend anythng please.
