NIC woes

I have two 3com 3c905b NICs installed in my computer running XP Home. I'm trying to set up a network with another computer running Win 98. I get the network media disconnected message on my XP. I've checked all the cables and tried pinging the NICs but all I get is the default IP addresses. HELP!!!!
