Windows XP Home. Tried to installed SP2 from CD, that failed. The system had
the update of SP2 in system tray, tried to install it that way. Failed again. Then a different update was available (security detections tool), installed ok. Tried the SP2 from CD again, system restarted on its own in the middle of extracting the files. When starting back up error... Stop: c0000135 winsrv was not found. Winows will not start. Select to boot to safe mode won't work, system will restart and back to Stop 0135 error. Tried the fix MS says in Recovery console using cd $ntservicepackuninstall$\spuninst at the prompt, says file not found. Tried to install OS using repair, goes through loading files, then sytem will loop, the bios screen, Window XP screen, then repeats itself. Any other ideas I could try? Thanks! |

When SP2 failed, what took place...You might open event viewer for details
to it.Also youre microsoft "fix" is incorrect for registry repair if thats the problem, try kb:307545 and or,314058 From here id 1st try recovery,in recovery type:CHKDSK C: /R If all else fails, boot to xp cd,install xp,select: "repair this copy" you only loose updates. I would open Event Viewer if I could get to it. The OS is not loading. I also
did boot to xp cd and installed using the repair, it loads the files, then it just keeps rebooting. I will look into the other kb's and my next step was using the CHKDSK. You said my "fix" was incorrect, I was using my error code - Stop: c0000135 winsrv was not found. All suggestions lead to the same article ID 885523. This system worked before trying to install SP2, but it would restart on its own on occassion. The automatic download updates was turned on, and SP2 was downloaded, you would think the computer would be fine because Microsoft says its ready and downloaded it automatically. You receive a "Stop: c0000135" and "winsrv was not found" error message after you install Windows XP Service Pack 2 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885523/en-us -- Sharon F MS-MVP ~ Windows Shell/User |

The health of RAM can be checked with tools. Faulty power supply comes to mind with sudden restarts as well. Wouldn't hurt to check the health of the hard drives as well. The MSKB article that discusses the STOP error refers to adware and/or the need to install Critical Update 885523 as a source for that problem. I posted a link to the article earlier but reading deeper into this thread, I see that you've already found it on your own. So you may have two issues going on: the order of install (or needing to get rid of the ad components from TVMedia). And possibly a slight hardware problem - one that doesn't scream the name of the offending component but enough of a problem that there have been unwanted restarts in the past. -- Sharon F MS-MVP ~ Windows Shell/User |

Thanks for your responce. I did notice a strange noise when trying to boot
up. After reading your suggestion to a harware issue, I open up the computer and listened while starting it up. The noise was coming from one of the CDdrives. I removed the cables from both cd drives, the floppy and second HD. Now I was able continue loading the OS. Since I had started reloading the OS with a repair, I shut down and switched the cd drives around, and continued with the repair. There is still a issue with I believe the OS, but now I can backup data, and reformat with a fresh copy. Thanks again! Well, you're not out of the woods yet but at least you're headed in the right direction. Good luck to you! -- Sharon F MS-MVP ~ Windows Shell/User |
