Default Owner access permission

I have a laptop i am trying to transfer the documents and settings off the
harddrive do my desktop by means of an external drive. (the laptop has a
problem with the display, not sure if its a hardware or software problem yet.

When i connect the drive to the desktop i have access to the created user
accounts, but the Owner account it says i do not have permission to access
the files. How can i get to these files through my desktop to recover them
so i can restore the laptop drive after i put it back in
