adding a soundtrack and general help on editing

I'm just beginning to shoot my mini-film for a documentary im making and I'm
starting to think about editing and what i want to do. I'm very very new to
this and have a very little idea of how to go about doing things, but i'll
figure it out soon enough. i am very confused about how to put parts of a
song, not the whole song, onto a few scenes.

any help would be nice.
