Default Making a DVD - funny Sonic message

I read in this forum that MM doesn't have a means of burning a CD/DVD. That
doesn't cause a problem as I can use Nero.

However, when I tried to save the movie to make into a DVD, after waiting an
age for it to produce a WMV file, it can up with a box that started going on
about Sonic something or other.

I guess it could be related to the installation of sonicencoders.msi
(http://www.ukshazam.com/download/) so I can burn DVDs in MCE?

I was very uncertain, but having waited an age for the WMV file, I wasn't
going to lose it and so made a copy. I then pressed cancel to the sonic
question and the WMV file disappeared!

So does MM have a DVD burn facility, or should I use Nero?

If MM has a burn facility, does anyone know if it is any good? Can it do a
decent scene selection menu?

WMM only has a "Burn to DVD" option if you have a Media Center PC that came
with SP2 preinstalled.
Even if you do have this it is still recommended to save to your harddrive
and then use your DVD Authoring software (in your case Nero Vision Express)
to create your DVD. This is simply because the process through Movie Maker
basically saves the file and imports to Sonic MyDVD and then creates a
simple movie. Sometimes, in fact often times, it fails and you end up with a
nice shiny coaster. If you save to your harddrive first you know if there is
a problem before getting a coaster plus you can view the movie in your Media
Player to make sure you like the result before creating a DVD.
Another important note to make is that you are far better off saving the
movie, unless it is all still images and music, as a DV-AVI instead of a WMV
file. This is higher quality going into the authoring program and hence a
better result coming out.

I use NeroVision Express, and there's one feature about it that I
don't like: it wants me to create an opening title. I make my
opening titles in Photoshop and import them into the movie. I can't
figure out how to have NeroVision Express skip their title function
and just burn my movie.

If I am reading this correctly then all you need to do is when the screen
comes up for your opening menu click the "Menus to use:" dropdown box. There
is a "Do not create a menu" option there.
This will then create a DVD that will simply play automatically when placed
in the DVD Player.
Is that what you were talking about?

Movie Maker only has very basic burning capabilities for DVD and it only has
that if you have a MCE machine that had SP2 preloaded on it. Otherwise you
have no ability to burn to DVD with Movie Maker. If you do have a new MCE
machine you have the option of selecting "Burn to DVD" but there is no
option for creating menus at all and all it really does is use Sonic's MyDVD
to burn your video to a DVD as a "proper" DVD. It will simply play when
inserted into a DVD player. If you want to create menus and backgrounds
etc... you need a DVD Authoring program. There is a list of the most popular
ones on my website in the "DVD Creation" section along with links to
download full or trial versions.
