Talking just a bit more info ...

The "heart" of your PC

If
not described in a retail computer ... don't buy 'that' computer.

Types ...
AT & Baby AT ... obsoleate
ATX & micro-ATX ... What we are used today
LPX
... low-profile cases (desktop model as opposed to a tower or mini-tower)
NLX ... "updated LPX" form factor
BTX
... Balanced Technology Extended form factor ... only time will tell if it will overtake ATX as the industry standard.

Nice introductory article for beginners Bex

I could get nit-picky about a couple of things, but I won't, don't wanna end up with a broken leg

Alwite.

That bit about no motherboard being faster than another is not strictly true. Agreed, like boards by different manufacturers may operate at same speeds but different chipsets can make a difference.

It's all about how fast data flows down the various buses and various factors, mostly the chipsets used, can influence that. Older boards are still available and they will operate a little slower than newer boards.

Agreed, the difference is negligible, but it's there.

I have noticed how some boards actually do work quicker than others, with identical components fitted. But that's a real life observation, not a set of lab figures.

Second point was about the motherboard being an expensive item in a setup. I'm actually surprised at how cheap motherboards are when one considers the research and design that goes into them, not to mention the host of accessories supplied with the better ones.

Usually the CPU, Video card and memory used in a system will cost more individually than the main board.

That's it.

Like I said, nit-picking. Leaving the article as it is is fine, in my opinion

Now don't thump me
