When you remove the old drive physically and put tie new DVD
drive in the tray, it is seen as the same drive because plug
and play still sees an optical drive.
Open device manager and remove the whole thing, secondary
IDE port, and the optical drives. Reboot ands plug and play
will detect "new" hardware and install the correct drivers.

| I'm trying to install a new DVD writer (The Sony 510A). I
simply want to
| take my cd writer out and put the DVD writer in it's place
(no room to do
| anything else). the only cables there are are the ide
cable form the DVD rom
| and the power cable and I've put those in the same places
on the DVD writer
| that they were on the cd writer (You can tell this is the
first time I've
| tried this can't you ???). Power's fine - DVD writer
drawer slides in and
| out but the pc isn't recognising the drive.
| Can anyone give me some tips on what I'm doing wrong
(bearing in mind that
| I'm not used to messing about inside the box).
| TIA

When you say the whole thing, could you explain to a computer moron just
what you mean? I tried deleting the cd drive in device manager, connected
the dvd drive but it just ignored it. (Yes the pins are ok by the way).
I've got my system details and some photos of the 2 drives & the inside of
my case on http://www.djh.ukjournalists.co.uk/...urce_report.htm .
Perhaps you could tell me what on device manager I should delete?
(Sorry to be a pain!)
