Default capturing a video clip shown on the computer

Hello. Let´s say I am watching a video clip (e.g. a ".avi" file) on my
computer. I would like to capture just a part of what I am watching in
the screen as I am watching it (including FWD and/or REVERSE and/or
PAUSES). Any suggestions about a free/shareware program that allow me
to do that. Thanks!
