Real Player alternative

There's a camera set up at a watering hole in Africa that I would like
to check out periodically, but one needs Real Player to see the
action. I've heard nothing but bad about RP and phone home technology.
Is there an alternative?

There are a couple of watering holes I check out occasionally, lucky there
are no cameras there

i noticed faststone has a player listed on dl page
never tried it, but their image program seems to work well.
