Default E-mail Address format

This may be out of scope, but I need to know if special characters are
permitted as the first digit in an e-mail address. I am writing a form for a
page and want to format the input to disallow any character in the first
digit other than a letter.

Thanks
Jack

Try testing it on this page:
http://mythic-beasts.com/~pdw/cgi-bin/emailvalidate it claims to validate
it according to RFC822: http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc0822.txt?number=822
