Default Internal DVD burner

How do you know which DVD burners are compatible with your laptop? According
to Dell, my laptop can only use a Dell burner. I was just wondering if they
were lying to me. Or am I just better off getting an external one.

I would doubt that they were lying to you. From what I understand, I
could be wrong though, but Dell computers are proprietary. This means
that they have their own standards of making things so you only can buy
parts manufactured or which goes with their rules. One example would be
that thier motherboard and power supply are proprietary. Upgrading a
motherboard would also mean upgrading a power supply to fit their
standards. I am not sure if they are still doing this because
personally, I am not a big fan of Dell. Anyways, even if you can buy a
internal DVD player from Dell, I wouldn't recommended because I have
friends who always needed to send some parts back for new ones. Your
best bet IMO is to get an external one.

They are probably lying, but I'd get an external one and connect via
firewire. If something happens to the notebook, you don't lose both. And
an external optical drive is often a handy thing to have.
