hp2110 psc printing troubles

Using XP, with HP PSC 2110 all in one, USB connection. Tried new cables
etc. It won't print from My Documents or Word processor or anything, unless
I first use either the scanner or copier to 'wake' up the printer, then it
prints fine that day. However next day(after shut down) the same problem -
any ideas anyone please?
