Hi,
I just got a PackardBell Easynote C3300 which seems to run on a mobile AMD Athlon XP-M 2600+. Since I got rid of Windows XP (for obvious reasons) and installed a W2k SP4 with all available updates I have no sound. Hardwaresettings read that the Audio-Controller is installed, but "SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio" not. In addition I miss a PCI Device. I googled and tried all kind of tools from the AMD site, but w/o success. Any ideas? Thanks a lot. Cheers! |

Well, you need Win2k drivers and you don't have them. I never understand the "obvious reasons" for downgrading an XP system, and then wondering why there are no drivers available. Q |

They're the same thing. Especially from a "for obvious reasons" point of view. Use your restore disc. Keep your patches applied to xp. Get an antivirus and keep it up to date. Get a firewall and keep it up to date. You have to do all of that in 2k or xp. You might as well make it easy on yourself. |

You're probably barking up the wrong tree here, this is not an AMD issue nor necessarily a Win2K issue, you just need to install the driver, most likely. If simply installing the driver alone doens't resolve it then you you might try removing those entries from Device Manager and rebooting. Here are some Packard Bell drivers, maybe the one you need is there or maybe not. Google searching for "ADI Soundmax" is another way to seek drivers. http://support.packardbell-europe.c...CAT127.asp?c=ap |

I guess you never read the EULA, nor noticed the ridiculous call in to Bill operations needed. -- "If you want to post a followup via groups.google.com, don't use the broken "Reply" link at the bottom of the article. Really, of all the reasons to use XP (or not), drivers aren't one of them. I'd actually rather XP DIDN'T install any drivers, leaving hardware IDs clean till the proper full feature and modern driver is installed. The obvious reasons to avoid XP include things like, not wanting to gamble on how long MS will support the online activation... some day they will make it hard if not impossible to activate, i predict. Not wanting any additional overhead. Really, what doe WinXP have that someone serious about (any particular job) would need? For the most part it just uses more memory and changes the GUI to new shaded colors. Maybe system restore, an incomplete way to backup a system that also eats up HDD space and slows the system down? Not agreeing to their EULA. Every time it's updated, it gets more offensive. Since they have the PC OS monopoly (no mainstream commercial alternative for a PC), many have to swallow a lot of the EULA that they wouldn't otherwise, but less is better. |

Get this: In order to access internet I needed the Ethernet driver, which I found there, but it didn't work, so after googling a while I found a driver for the same chipset, but for W98 - and this one does fine with W2k... weird... h. |

With ethernet it's often easiest to just go to the respective ethernet chip manufacturer (via markings on the chip face itself, ID it), for example Realtek, and get their newest driver. That strategy works for many but not all devices, and ADI (Soundmax) website might have a driver for audio. |

It would be good to start a new thread for this issue rather than posting under the current thread. |
