missed lines on black printed areas

i have an Epson Stylus Color 600 and have started getting missed narrow
lines on black printed areas.the colour areas are perfectly OK. i have tried
cleaning the print heads using the utility but it makes no difference. this
started happening after i had refilled the printer cartridge with ink a
couple of times.is the print head going. if so i'm going to have to pension
it off .

The nozzles on the print head will clog if you don't print often enough. The color nozzles on my Stylus Color 500 will clog if I go more than 2 weeks without printing. The black nozzles on my brother's Stylus Color 600 have clogged up several times. The last time the nozzles on my printer clogged up I was able to open them up by cleaning them with a cotton swap and water. I have not had much luck cleaning my brother's print head, but twice it started printing after replacing the black ink cartridge, even though there was no indication it was empty or even low on ink.

I have used water before, but I think the best solvent would be some
fresh ink.
Maybe the new ink disolves dried ink you cannot get at from the outside.
I am not sure is a cotten swap is a good idea if some cotten gets trapped
in one of the holes.
I am thinking if water works then surely ink would run on a 'wet page'?

I tried alcohol first but found that water works better. I know the ink is water soluble because it smears badly even from a damp finger. I have not had any problems using cotton swabs. The holes are probably too small for the cotton to go in.

Warm distilled water, a bit of ammonia and a drop of detergent in it.
Window cleaner with ammonia will do in a pinch, soak the head and run
head-cleaning util without letting it dry first.
