Last night my kid called me at work saying he couldn't use internet
explorer. He could get e-mail, play diablo II on-line etc. but got an error everytime he tried to use explorer. It said there was a missing ..dll file even though a search showed the file to be present. I figured maybe the file had been corrupted somehow and suggested he re-install Win Me. He did this and still had the same problem. Today he called me at work again saying that windows wouldn't even boot up. I tried it when I got home and got an "error in explorer.exe, please reinstall windows" error. I tried reinstalling Windows ME but it says there is no boot record on my CD Rom Drive. I tried the Windows Me Start-up floppy... says there's no boot record. It says the Hard Drive boot record is ok... but can't figure out how to boot to DOS so I can try to configure stuff through DOS. Is there an F-Key or anyway to boot to dos in ME? I would prefer not to format this drive if I don't have to as I still had a few work files on it when I gave it to him. It's an 1800+ AMD with a 40 GB Maxtor hard drive. I can be reached at bytrydr@telus.net TIA |

I had the same problem. If you are running Norton SystemWorks 2002, you
need to reload Norton instead of WindowsME. byteryder wrote: > Last night my kid called me at work saying he couldn't use internet > explorer. Kinda sounds like a bootsector virus, have Norton or something?. Did you
try a System disk maybe and a FDISK/ MBR? I would Pause the boot loader screens using the Keyboard pause key and make sure the hard drive/s are seen by the BIOS(Enter Key to Continue). Then I would check all hardware cables. -- Free Windows/PC help, http://www.geocities.com/sheppola/trouble.html email shepATpartyheld.de Free songs to download and,"BURN" :O) http://www.soundclick.com/bands/8/nomessiahsmusic.htm |

This would get you into dos, Have you tried using a virus checker? If you haven't, not much point doing anything else to the box. Only after running one would I put a boot disk in the slot. > >>I would prefer not to format this drive if I don't have to as I still >>had a few work files on it when I gave it to him. >> >>It's an 1800+ AMD with a 40 GB Maxtor hard drive. > It might well come to it. regards Graham |

Would not go to Safe Mode or anything else-- I booted from the ME CD (you may need to change the boot sequence in the BIOS) Cancelled the install and this left me in DOS Changed to C drive Typed WIN at the prompt and ENTER When it tried to start Windows it restored to an earlier set of system files. Then there was a missing file, a DLL - can't recall its name, but I found it on the CD. Good luck - reinstalling is a pain. |

"Eventually", it would be good to determine how this situation came about... possibly a BHO (browser helper object), an uninstalled application, trojan/virus, or any number of potential issues. For the time being, determine what that file is, it's function. By the filename you can Google search it. If it's not associated with a program or windows itself, then you might want to determine where, why this file is being called and remove that reference to it. If it IS a required part of windows or other application, you can likley find it on the 'net if you don't have another machine available to restore this file, else there is a DOS command to extract files from the window's CAB installation files... I just don't remember the command at the moment, but again a Google search will find it. > >I figured maybe the file had been corrupted somehow and suggested he >re-install Win Me. If the system won't even make it to the desktop, enter the boot menu [F8] right after the bios enumeration screen, then choose to make a bootlog. If it will boot to the desktop before the error then boot into safemode from the aforementioned menu for further troubleshooing measures. >I tried reinstalling Windows ME but it says there is no boot record on >my CD Rom Drive. Check your bios, you may not have the boot order set properly to check the CDROM and floppy drives... nothing that happens within windows ME should affect whether the system can or can't boot from a CDROM or floppy. Get that working, be able to boot from both devices. It's almost certain you can accomplish that by changing some bios settings. >Is there an F-Key or anyway to boot to dos in ME? F8 is boot menu. However, once you have the bios set properly you should be able to boot from *any* DOS boot floppy. >I would prefer not to format this drive if I don't have to as I still >had a few work files on it when I gave it to him. > >It's an 1800+ AMD with a 40 GB Maxtor hard drive. > >I can be reached at bytrydr@telus.net You might want to scan the system for viri and other malware. |
