I have written to Sony THREE times already and have not gotten an answer yet
(after sufficient waiting time) I have a P4 2 GHz system with 512 MB of DDR RAM running in Dual Channel Mode on a Windows XP home SP1 OS. I have been using my Sony DRU-510A 4X DVD Burner with Nero and wondering why it get the message "can only write at 2x instead of 3x to current disc" EVERYTIME! I have tried several media types that say they are 4x compatible but this message leads me to believe I am not getting the full potential out of my 4x DVD Burner. Is there a setting I need to adjust somewhere? The burns complete ok, just want to know why the speeds are slower than I thought. Thanks. Anyone? |

Do a dummy burn, i.e. tick Determine maximum speed, untick Write then click Speed test. What's the result of the speed measurement? |

Have you ever been to the Sony Support web site for the DRU510A? If not, you definately need to go there. http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/dru510adwn.htm It's also highly possible you need a firmware update. I personally elected to forego updating my firmware only because I didn't want to go through the tediousness of uninstalling Nero and other programs and then reinstalling after the update. I find +R/RW burn at 4X but -R/RW burn at 2X. When I have more time, and get back into DVD burning, I'll probably upgrade. But right now, it's not a priority for me. The following was taken from the Sony DRU5120A web site. Note the last sentence. "The DVD/CD rewritable drives are designed for best performance with discs produced by major disc manufacturers. In most cases, there is no problem as long as you use discs conform to the industry standard for various CD and DVD formats. However, some of discs on the market do not meet the recognized quality and performance standards. With the DVD/CD rewritable drives, we recommend the disc manufacturers and discs below. Furthermore, it is recommended to upgrade your drive with the latest firmware available at user support web site." The latest firmware can be downloaded at http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/dru510adwn.htm f Reply Address Purposly Altered to eliminate SPAM Reply by Post Only Please |

This is the site I sent my questions to three times: http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/contact.htm > It's also highly possible you need a firmware update. That is also entirely possible as I have seen this statement a couple of times now, but without confirmation from SONY I am afraid I may ruin something. |

Now click Recorder > Choose recorder and write down what the Maximum speed is. Drag 2GB or so files into the compilation window, click the Burn icon, then Burn tab, untick Write, tick Determine maximum speed, click the button on the right which will now say Speed Test. Post the speed measurement. |
