I purchesed one a few weeks ago and have had no problems with it. I have
written to CD-R , DVD-RW(1x) and DVD-R(4x) with no coasters. I did try
making a few movie DVDs on the DVD-R disks, all worked in standard TV
connected DVD players.

I have not tried any 8x disks as I cannot find any locally, and have not got
round to ordering any yet.

Yeah its mentioned a lot in many groups and sites. Its pretty popular.
This guy named Herrie has a website in which he provides uptodate and
hacked firmware for NECs though I think it mostly the 4x version , he
does have a few firmwares for the 2500. Generally excellent feedback
for the drive that Ive seen.
