Default virus? Need help

I have a friend that is running Windows 98 SE. He says hes running
Norton Antivirus 2002 which is updated.

The problem he is having is when he starts windows, he cant even get
into Control Panel as his system is sending out emails like crazy.

I recommended that he purchase a new copy of Norton. However, he has
alot of important files that he needs to keep.

I was thinking of installing in safe mode but you wouldnt have cdrom
drivers right?

Any assistance is much appreciated. Please respond to email.

1) Download the following three items...

McAfee Stinger
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

Trend Sysclean Package
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp

Latest Trend signature files.
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp

Create a directory.
On drive "C:\"
(e.g., "c:\New Folder")
or the desktop
(e.g., "C:\Documents and Settings\lipman\Desktop\New Folder")

Download SYSCLEAN.COM and place it in that directory.
Dowload the signature files (pattern files) by obtaining the ZIP file.
For example; lpt244.zip

Extract the contents of the ZIP file and place the contents in the same directory as
SYSCLEAN.COM.

2) If you are using WinME or WinXP, disable System Restore
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDo...eSysRestore.htm
3) Reboot your PC into Safe Mode
4) Using both the Trend Sysclean utility and Stinger, perform a Full Scan of your
platform and clean/delete any infectors found
5) Restart your PC and perform a "final" Full Scan of your platform using both.
6) If you are using WinME or WinXP, Re-enable System Restore and re-apply any
System Restore preferences, (e.g. HD space to use suggested 400 ~ 600MB),
7) Reboot your PC.
8) If you are using WinME or WinXP, create a new Restore point

Joe (and many many others): There is no need quoting all this quoting
lines [snipped] again only to say:

> OK thanks

Please have a look at:

Not mine. This PC is running with this installation since mid January
2000 (according to creation date of system.1st), has seen a lot of
freeware, games and technical updates, is run with browsers like Opera
and Netscape/Mozilla instead of IE, is run with a proprietary mail
program instead of OE, is sharing dedicated folders in read-only-mode,
far away from any C:\Windows\sumthing, doesn't messenge, and is as good
as any freshly installed Win98 on a PII with 400 MHz can ever be.
